Step 1: Make Sure Your Vehicle Was Titled in Texas

Before you do anything, double-check that your vehicle was last titled in Texas. If it was purchased or registered in another state, you’ll need to go through that state’s DMV instead.

But if your car’s title was issued in Texas, you’re in the right place. Let’s keep going.

📝

Step 2: Complete the Duplicate Title Form

To get a new copy of your title, you’ll need to fill out Form VTR-34 — that’s Texas’s official Application for a Certified Copy of Title.

Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

🔍 The VIN number of your vehicle

🆔 A valid Texas driver’s license or photo ID

✍️ The signatures of all owners listed on the original title

📄 A lien release letter if there was a loan on the vehicle that has since been paid off

👉 Heads up: You can only apply for a duplicate if it’s been more than 30 days since the last title was issued.

🖊️

Step 3: Sign in Front of a Notary or DMV Staff

Texas requires the form to be either:

📋

Notarized

or

🏢

Signed in front of an authorized DMV employee

This step protects you from fraud and helps ensure the new title is issued to the right person.

💵

Step 4: Pay the Fee

The cost of a replacement title depends on how you apply:

$2

if you send it by mail

$5.45

if you apply in person at your local tax office

Since Balch Springs is in Dallas County, you’ll want to go to a Dallas County Tax Assessor-Collector office nearby.

📬

Step 5: Submit Your Application

You have two options:

🏢

Apply in Person

Visit your local Dallas County Tax Office. Bring:

📋 Your completed and signed Form VTR-34
🆔 Your photo ID
💵 The fee
📄 Any lien release documents if needed
📮

Apply by Mail

Send your notarized form, a copy of your ID, and the $2 fee to:

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

1601 Southwest Parkway, Suite A

Wichita Falls, TX 76302

Important Notes

Once the new title is issued, the original is no longer valid. If you find the old one later, you’ll need to surrender it to the DMV.
