Step 1: Make Sure Your Vehicle Was Titled in Texas

The first thing to confirm is whether your car was last titled in Texas. If your vehicle was purchased or registered in another state, you will need to request a replacement title through that state’s DMV.

If the vehicle was titled in Texas, you are ready for the next step.

📝

Step 2: Fill Out the Right Form

To request a duplicate title, you will need to fill out Form VTR-34 — also known as the Application for a Certified Copy of Title.

You will need the following:

🔍 Your vehicle’s VIN

🆔 A valid Texas driver’s license or photo ID

✍️ The signatures of all current owners listed on the original title

📄 A lien release letter if the vehicle was financed but the loan has been paid off

👉 You can only request a duplicate: if it has been at least 30 days since the last title was issued.

🖊️

Step 3: Sign in Front of a Notary or DMV Official

You must sign the form in front of a notary or a DMV representative. This step protects against fraud and ensures the title is issued to the correct person.

💵

Step 4: Pay the Required Fee

Texas charges a small fee depending on how you apply:

$2

if applying by mail

$5.45

if applying in person at a local county tax office

Since Combine, Texas is located in both Kaufman County and Dallas County, check which office serves your address.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

Apply by Mail

Mail your notarized form, a copy of your ID, and the $2 fee to:

Important Reminders

Once you receive your replacement title, the original becomes invalid. If you find the old one later, you must turn it in to the DMV.

If your vehicle had a lien, make sure you include proper documentation showing the loan has been paid off.
