First Things First: Was Your Car Titled in Texas?

First, make sure your vehicle was actually titled in Texas. If not from Texas, you'll need to go to the DMV from that state in order to request a duplicate.

However, if you know your title is (or was) Texas, you're in luck.

📝

Step 1: Fill Out the Title Replacement Form

To get a new copy of your title, you'll need to fill out a form called VTR-34, or "Application for a Certified Copy of Title." It's fairly easy and asks for things like:

Your car’s VIN (car identification number)

Your driver’s license number and name

Signatures of all listed owners

And if there was financing on the car (a lien), you might need to give them proof that it’s been paid out

Important: It’s only possible to get a new title if it’s been at least 30 days since the last one was issued.

🖊️

Step 2: Sign It (Properly)

Once your form is filled out, you'll have to either:

📋

Sign it in front of a notary

🏢

Visit the DMV and have a DMV worker witness your signature

This step ensures the paperwork is valid and keeps you safe from title fraud.

💵

Step 3: Pay the Fee

Texas does charge a small fee for title replacement:

$2.00

if you mail it

$5.45

if you visit the Ellis County Tax Office in person (that’s the local office for most people in Ferris)

📬

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Now that you're ready, just send it off or drop it off.

🏢

In Person

Go to the Ellis County Tax Office at: 109 S Jackson St, Waxahachie, TX 75165

Bring your completed form, your ID, any lien documents if needed, and the fee.

📮

By Mail

If you’re mailing it, send everything (signed and notarized form, ID copy, $2 fee) to:

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

Vehicle Titles and Registration Division

P.O. Box 26417

Austin, TX 78755-0417

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

When the new title is released, the old one is no longer valid. If you find yourself encountering the original afterwards, you will be required to surrender it.

Owing on your car? You might need a letter from the lender stating the loan’s been paid off.
