Step 1: Was Your Car Titled in Texas?

To start with, ensure your car was titled in Texas. If the car was previously registered and titled in another state, you'll have to deal with that state's DMV.

But assuming you're quite sure the car did have a Texas title, you're ready to proceed.

📝

Step 2: Fill Out the Right Form

To request a replacement title in Texas, you’ll need to complete Form VTR-34, which is the official Application for a Certified Copy of Title. You’ll need:

The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

Your Texas driver’s license or state ID

The signature of every owner listed on the original title

A lien release letter, if the car had a loan that has now been paid off

Pro Tip: You can only apply for a duplicate if it’s been at least 30 days since the last title was issued. Don’t lose the new one too quickly, then!

Step 3: Sign It Properly

Here’s the important part: You'll have to sign the form in front of a notary OR have an employee of the DMV witness your signature.

This makes it all official and legal.

💵

Step 4: Pay the Title Replacement Fee

Texas charges a small amount when you mail it in:

$2.00

if mailing it

$5.45

if bringing it to your local county tax office in person

Glenn Heights shares land between Dallas County and Ellis County, so make sure you go to the proper one based on where you live.

Step 5: Send in the Application

You have two options for sending in your form:

🏢

In Person

Visit your county tax office (Dallas or Ellis County).

Bring form, ID, payment, and any other documentation like a lien release.

The moment your replacement title is released, the original one becomes obsolete. Should you find it later, you will need to turn it over.

Owing on the vehicle? Be sure to include a lien release in your application.
